Scrap CLEAR: You have NOTHING to hide!
A scrapping "project" by the MSW Team
ScrapScene’s Scrap Clear Challenge excited me immensely. The idea of being able to scrap onto something that does not hide anything was something new to me. I sometimes hide a lot of my mistakes behind a matting or embellishment or simply make a layout more interesting with the proper combination of colors for cut-ups and background. The challenge of not being able to hide anything, or of not committing any mistakes to hide to begin with, made the obsessive-compulsive side of me itch to scrap something clear. The idea that my entire layout will have to rely on a great layout design rather than pieces of paper really got my adrenalin pumping! Hence, I joined the ScrapScene Challenge and made two entries.

The one thing that irritated me no end was that overlays aren’t sturdy enough to hold much weight than a photo and some small pieces of paper. I used overlays to scrap clear. Add a chipboard or two, some flowers and cardstock stickers and chances are, your layout can only be seen lying down. It just wouldn’t hold up!

Long after Scrap Scene’s challenge is over, I STILL wanted to scrap CLEAR but hated the though that my layout won’t hold up for people to appreciate seeing through it! It just had to lie down flat!

My entries in ScrapScene showed me the joys of scrapping CLEAR!

Not anymore! 12x12 one-eighth inch thick acrylic sheets are now currently being sold in Memory Lane and Lasting Impression! MyScrapWorks got to scrap the first few pieces and we couldn’t believe just how beautiful and wonderful seeing “clear” can be! (Shots of the layouts were taken in the garden. Hence, the foliage as see-thru background!)

We stamped on it, painted it, worked at it with overlays, rub-ons, pens, scrapped normally with it and did just about anything we could possibly do to push our scrapping boundaries further! We even worked on it front and back, one technique after another! The result? See for yourself!

And we got to scrap some minis too! What’s cool about the minis is that they can go accordion style or mini book! They can be a hanging series of frames (to adorn the walls of your scrap room) or a 2 or 3-paneled picture frame to put on top of your table! It was so versatile that Alby had to have 2 sets of it to bind together for a multi-paged CLEAR mini! Wow! We at MSW had a blast with the “Clears!”

Go check out Memory Lane and Lasting Impression for the 12x12 “Clear Sheets” and the mini “Clear Book.” We heard they are going… going… gone!

By the way, all of the projects you see here are on display in either Memory Lane or Lasting Impression scrapbooking stores. Check them out! Better yet, make one yourself and be sure to show it off at the Gallery! We’d love to see how you scrapped it! Things we learned from experience and tips we would like to share:

  1. Stamp only with Staz-On. Other inks just won't adhere. Adding heat won't make any difference. Other pigment inks will just smudge!
  2. Acrylic paint will immediately, IMMEDIATELY set! Brush paint when you are absolutely sure where you want it and how! Lala swears that the effect of Specialty Glaze Pearl MM paint is fab!
  3. Make sure to set rub-ons well or else they will "lift!"
  4. Glue Dots work wonderfully! Two-way glue also works just fine!
  5. Heat-setting anything (glitters, gel ink pens, powders, etc.) will make it adhere temporarily. It would just as easily scrape-off! Don't attempt it! Too much heat could warp your sheet! If this happens, Lala advises to place a heavy book on top of the acrylic sheet as it cools off to keep it flat. (Yup! Lala attempted heat.)
  6. When you plan your mini, plan not just the front of the page but the back of the page AND THEN put into consideration the REST of the pages too! What do you want to remain "hidden" and what do you want to show through when all the pages are stacked up together? If it is just a one-sided picture frame or a hanging frame then you don't have to think about this. If it is a mini, then there would be so many factors to consider each time just to layout a page. It would feel overwhelming or stressful at first as Airees said, but just go ahead and scrap acrylic! You will be glad you did!
Go CLEAR! You have NOTHING to hide!
