I'm the type who suffers from sleepless nights when I have to go out the following day to buy a gift for someone who means so much to me.

I'm definitely not the type who would grab just about anything pretty so that I can go have something to wrap and that would be about it. I agonize over selecting this or that item or whether one particular item would hit the right decibels (in terms of joyful screams) when my gift gets opened eventually.

I unluckily/luckily have a few close friends who have just about everything money can buy (literally and figuratively). Unlucky because this means I cant BUY them things off the rack and lucky because I love "making" my own gifts than go out and buy them.

That's why I love "minis" or Mini Albums. I get to make them and the ones that receive them treasure them for life.

As I've said during my Memory Box demo, a close friend who got married will jump up and down when she gets to receive a mini than another punch bowl or glass set --- no matter how beautiful or expensive.

Can you imagine a bride jumping up and down over a set of "baso?" --- go figure :) But I sure can imagine her screaming her head off or wiping a tear when she gets to see a "mini" made just for her.

Life's Journey mini accordions are available in their Robinson's Galleria store and in all Rustan's stores in Metro Manila.

My most recent encounter with a mini is with a K&Company Life's Journey Accordion Book from Memory Box. They come in 6x6 and 4x6 - Ivory Covered (with matching papers on the inside) and Craft Covered (with black papers inside).

The 6x6 minis sell at P369.75 while the 4x6 minis that come with a metal label holder on the cover sell at P489.75. While the Life's Journey tagbooks looked tempting enough, sold in the same colors for P409.75, I had to pass them up as I badly needed minis in "accordion" style to enable me to scrap "lumpy" with my fibers, thick matting et al.

Among the minis I have encountered, I love the Life's Journey 4x6 and 6x6 accordions the best. Why? The covers are so thick they are better than "altered" books. I look at them as a "canvass" -- you go paint, draw, cut and paste any way you want and it would come out beautiful.

Most people are intimidated in doing minis and I ask why? Its almost the same as making a card saying "I love you" or "You're Special" --- but since you have several panels to fill up then you can go say them several ways too! With pictures even!

That's the point I guess - minis are just cards you get to write on and fill up with your thoughts - you just added a few more "pages!" ... And I believe if the person you are giving it to is really THAT close to you I doubt if you'd have difficulty filling up all those panels with something beautiful to say --- whether it be in words or photos.

Three, four or five pictures would do the trick. Think of a message. Stocks for a mini isn't THAT demanding. Minis require little paper. A 6x6 mini would require just about two 12x12 sheets! Have those small paper cut-outs? One or two remaining items in an embellishment pack you already consumed? That would be enough. (Airees with her trash-trove of paper cutouts would love the mini! :)

Someone asked me what my secret is to having an easy time with minis. I said:

  1. I get to do them ONLY for people I deeply care about so I never run out of words to journal.
  2. I get to think about my color palette and the predominant color that would run the length of the spread OR colors that would connect one panel to the other so the length of the spread would look like just one "long layout."
  3. I get to cut all the background paper I will use per panel, design every panel BUT not paste them against the accordion UNTIL after the entire panel is assembled. Mounting a panel against the accordion IS the LAST thing you'd ever have to do.
  4. I don't feel "obligated" to fill up every empty space with an embellishment or a picture.. The spaces are for my "letter"... my journaling and what I have to say to the person who will receive my mini. Quit dumping all the embellishments you can find in your mini. Don't "suffocate" your message with a lot of eyecandy that will distract the recipient from getting to your message.
  5. I do my minis with love. Period. I get to enjoy every minute of it.

Share with me your minis. Take a picture of them and I promise to publish them in the site for you!

07.06.2006: I was about to upload when I got hold of an email from Nathalie Jane Lopez who made her first accordion! I was grinning from ear to ear as I looked at the photos she sent my way because it was truly a far cry from the Jane who sent me a sample of her LOs asking for my opinion on how she can improve her pages. Far cry is an understatement. I was dumfounded when I saw her work! Please take the time to look at her accordion. Please note that she is a NEWBIE! With this kind of work however I don't think anyone would believe her NOW! Jane? Im soooo proud of you! I'm honored that youve chosen to share this with us! :) Thank you so much for the kind words. :) -M
